Across the tubes

This is my first, “I Did Not Like” on this review blog. It’s a novel idea to show the best from each tube service, but ultimately this is a bust. It still needs a lot of work to make it user friendly. No matter what I tried to look for I received results for news and most of that was political ramblings about right or left wing political views on a situation. I was looking for entertainment and instead I get stuff about the Obama admin. Just my thoughts, but that wasn’t to entertaining. For those that are entertained by the news, especially news on politics, I am so very sorry that you cannot find anything else to enjoy. My point it that I would rather watch a funny video of rednecks flinging squirrels into trees with a shot flinging device than visit this website again. I like squirrels. For those who are interested in going to one website that scans across all video hosting tubes like YouTube this would be a good sight to follow.

Want to write an online book?

So how many of us would love to be online writers? Or Fancy being part of some collaboration. I have been to a lot of community sites that promise something similar, but they fall short on delivering the goods often. This website does much more than that. It delivers the goods without the promises. It is a simple sight that lets you add a bit of text to an ongoing story. Then the next guy can add some and so on and so forth. The beauty of this service is that there is no sign up and no registration. It’s free and it’s fun. You don’t have to adhere to any kind of content etc. The possibilities for good and for bad are there. This is definitely a sight for anyone who is stuck and just needs to jot down a few lines of nonsense. The sigh name Write Something.

Contails

This is one awesome and free web service. It allows a person to sync their address books across platforms fairly effortlessly. I was able to transfer, condense and then add all of my contacts to this service then put them back on a newly created email account. The service downloads your contact lists from desktop email programs also. I suggest this for someone who has contacts across multiple email accounts that wants them to be condensed. One of the best features is that it will sync with your cell phone, unfortunately that feature doesn’t work with all cell phones yet, but for blackberry and iPhone users this feature is exceptionally helpful.

Unfortunately

I have not been able to get Cute PDF to work so that may be it’s review. On the upside I do have good things to say about open office. It is intuitive and very much like Microsoft Office in many ways. For the average user The ways it differs are probably not a problem. In the text document creator (open office’s version of word) there is a direct to PDF creator. I really like that function. I could not get this program to open existing PDF documents so that I could edit them. I’m not saying that it cannot do this, I’m just saying that it won’t for me. Ultimately I like this program for it’s simplicity and functionality, but I think I will stick with Scribus for my PDF needs.

Scribus 1.3.3.13

That is one heck of a title. The software is a good desktop publisher. It is solid and seems to work good for organizing content and the layout of anything that you want to publish. Since I am looking at it as a PDF creation tool that will be my focus.

The program makes PDF’s nicely. It allows for changeable content. It even edits them without fuss. This tool is definitely a good start. The only negative thing I have to say about it is that is uses an image editing program called gimp and unless you have that installed you cannot easily resize and manipulate images for your PDF.

Scribus program is not a direct create from existing document program. For that we will look at Cute PDF. However, for a free alternative to actually creating PDF documents from scratch I give this one a thumbs up.

PDF PROJECT

I am currently looking into different free (and I do mean free) PDF creation programs. Of course Adobe has the best program out there for creating PDF files. However, not all of us can afford to buy a three hundred dollar program to edit or create a document like that. I have three that I am looking at right now. The first is a program called Scribus. The second is Cute PDF. The third is the PDF creator in Open Office.

I have just started to look into creating a document with Scribus. So far I like it. I write a full review on each of the three programs I mentioned as I look into each of them.

Carbonmade.com

This is an online portfolio for creative persons that do anything two dimensional or able to be photographed. The website is easy to use and intuitive. There is subscription and free option to this website. It is also a community driven website which means networking for you if you are using this as a portfolio in anyway.

There are some drawbacks, which are not many and aren’t really drawbacks. The tools used to create the portfolio limit you slightly in you customization abilities. The free account only allows for five projects and thirty-five pictures. All in all, for what you get these are not really drawbacks.

I would suggest that anyone who is a creative person and would like to share their work create a portfolio on here. The site does not allow persons to easily copy your work. It has the ability to display work done in video, flash, photographed and scanned work. The portfolio looks fantastic once completed. I cannot say enough how this site is a must for any creative persons that works in two dimensional, video, or sculpture.
